Leila De Lima Declines the Offer of President Marcos to Move her to Safer Jail

Senator Leila De Lima allegedly declined the offer of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr to be transferred to safer jail.

After three prisoners attempted to escape from the Custodial Center of the Philippine National Police (PNP) at Camp Crame on Sunday, October 9, PBBM offered to move the former senator to another detention facility. De Lima was taken hostage as a result.

De Lima Marcos Offer

Interior Sec. Benhur Abalos disclosed this after she visited de Lima at Camp Crame, where the two had the chance to talk about what had transpired and for the latter to assess her condition. Abalos claimed that during the visit, he informed de Lima of the President’s message regarding the possibility of her transfer to a more secure detention facility.

“The President told me to tell (former) senator de Lima what she wants to ensure her safety. It’s her choice, it’s always for her safety and interest,” Abalos told reporters in an interview.

Abalos claims that the President instructed him to find a location inside the PNP Custodial Center’s perimeter. Senators Bong Revilla and Jinggoy Estrada’s detention facilities, which they used while being held in custody due to the pork barrel scam, were one of the facilities given, according to Abalos. The allegations against Revilla had already been dropped.

The buildings once used as the PNP Custodial Center officers’ quarters. It was transformed into detention facilities for Estrada and Revilla. Abalos claims that De Lima stated that she wishes to remain in her current location because she feels safer there.

According to Abalos, who cited the police report, De Lima was bound and blindfolded when Feliciano Sulayao, Jr., one of the prisoners, managed to escape and approach the area where the former senator is being held. Idang Susukan and Arnel Cabintoy, De Lima’s other two friends, had already been shot dead when Sulayao took De Lima captive.

Susukan and Cabintoy allegedly opened fire after continuing to stab a police officer who was then delivering food rations in the PNP Custodial Center’s maximum security sector. General Rodoldo Azurin, Jr., the head of the PNP, had stated that De Lima was unharmed and in secure custody.
