Abra Earthquake – President Bongbong Marcos and senators are pushing the passage of the bill seeking to establish the Department of Disaster Resilience following the 7.3 magnitude earthquake that hit Abra on July 27, 2022.

Following the disaster, PBBM and lawmakers are pressing the disaster resilience bill. The President, based on the report from One News PH, said that the country needs to improve the capability to mitigate disasters that are the effects of climate change.

He said that although he does not want to be pessimistic, the recent earthquake will happen again and there can be more disasters to come because of the extreme weather.

You have seen what happened to Europe, what happened to America. We might experience that, the intense heat,” the Chief Executive said. He added that the country can handle typhoons and earthquakes as of now but climate change imposes different kinds of dangers.

With this, the President said that the country needs to have a specialist agency as he pointed out that the fact that the Philippines is prone to disasters should be acknowledged.

Our planning for the future should include all the mitigation – all the science and the knowledge and the learnings on the mitigation of these kinds of disasters. Earthquakes are different… The real problem with earthquakes is we cannot predict them. At least when it comes to the typhoon, there is a warning,” PBBM said following the Abra Earthquake.

The Chief Executive also said that the country needs to get a balance between cost and the mitigation requirements of the building code in order to be safe when earthquakes and strong typhoons happen.

Although the creation of the Department of Disaster Resilience was not part of his 19 priority measures that were cited during his first State of the Nation Address (SONA), PBBM vowed that he will prioritize alleviating the vulnerability of the country when it comes to climate change.
