ESTRELLA ALFON – This is the life and works of the famous female writer, Estrella Alfon, a writer from the pre-war days to the post-war days. 

Born in 1917 and hailing from Cebu is Estrella Alfon. She writes mostly in English and she was a known story writer, playwright, and journalist. She attempted to take a pre-medical course at the University of the Philippines, however, she was mistakenly diagnosed with tuberculosis and this has disabled her to finish her pre-med course.

After resigning from that course, she attended the University of the Philippines with an Associate of Arts degree. Regardless of her finished course, she was appointed as a professor of Creative Writing at the University of the Philippines, Manila.

She was also a member of the U.P. Writers Club.

  • Honorable Mention in the Commonwealth Literary Award for her “Dear Esmeralda”, a collection of her short stories
  • won all the prizes in the Arena Theater Play Writing Contest: “Losers Keepers” (first prize), “Strangers” (second prize), “Rice” (third prize), and “Beggar” (fourth prize) in the year 1962-1962
  • the top prize in the Palanca Contest for “With Patches of Many Hues”
  • Second place at Palanca Award for her short story “The White Dress” in the year 1974
  • National Fellowship in Fiction post at the U.P. Creative Writing Center in 1979
  • the only female member of the Veronicans (a group for writers in the 1930s led by Francisco Arcellana and H.R. Ocampo)
  • Some of her recognitions from Palanca are:
    • 3rd Place: Forever Witches, a one-act play (1960)
    • 1st Place: With Patches of Many Hues, a one-act play (1962)
    • 2nd Place: Tubig, One-act Play (1963)
    • 3rd Place: The Knitting Straw, one-act play, (1968)
    • 2nd Place: The White Dress, short story (1974)

She died on December 28, 1983. She suffered from a heart attack and this happened while she was on stage at the event of that year’s Manila Film Festival.
