Brandon Espiritu Issues Apology Following Heated Debate Over Representation
BRANDON ESPIRITU – The pageant community was shaken after Brandon Espiritu’s statement ignited discussions about who gets to represent the Philippines on the international stage.
Brandon Espiritu has publicly apologized after facing criticism from netizens and several well-known personalities over his remarks about “halfies” joining national pageants and representing the Philippines.
Espiritu, the Mister Supranational Philippines 2024 titleholder, is a Filipino-American male pageant winner. The controversy erupted after a comment he made on an Instagram post by fellow Filipino-American model, fitness personality, and beauty pageant titleholder Jether Palomo went viral.

Palomo is known for frequently competing in male pageants while representing the Philippines. He was crowned Mister Pilipinas Global 2025 and represented the country at Mister Global 2025, where he finished in the Top 11.
Before that, Palomo gained recognition as the grand winner of Century Tuna Superbods 2024, one of the country’s most prestigious fitness competitions. In 2023, he also placed as first runner-up at Mister Tourism World 2023 held in Brazil.
The issue stemmed from a discussion about a pageant segment in which contestants were asked to sing a song in their native language. Referring to the American flag, Jether stated, “I pledge allegiance to the flag.”
Espiritu responded with the comment, “raise that flag brother.”
A netizen then questioned the situation, writing, “The question is at least one of you represented the Philippines but no one sang in Tagalog.”
Espiritu replied, “because we aren’t from the Philippines. Why would we lie.”
The netizen then answered, “then you should have represented your country.”
In response, Espiritu wrote, “Tell that to all the front runners for the Philippines. This country wouldn’t have a chance on the national stage without us halfies.”

The statement quickly sparked backlash online, with many netizens expressing disappointment and questioning the implications of his remarks. Some argued that the comment appeared to undermine the abilities and achievements of full-blooded Filipinos who have successfully brought honor to the country in various international competitions.
Screenshots of comments from Miss Universe Philippines 2024 1st runner-up Stacey Gabriel and renowned Filipino fashion designer-artist Michael Cinco also circulated online.
“Disgraceful. You either embrace your Filipino heritage fully when you represent us or you don’t at all. This term ‘halfies’ is a destructive, racially-motivated word designed to needlessly segregate us,” said Stacey.
“The nerve of these ordinary-looking guys acting superior when they don’t even look like they have any foreign ancestry… They only come to the Philippines to build a career and gain followers…DUHHH…” Michael Cinco remarked.
As criticism continued to grow, Espiritu released a statement apologizing and clarifying his controversial comment. According to him, the remark was made impulsively, and he understood why many people viewed it as disrespectful.
“I am proud to represent the Philippines and proud of my Filipino heritage. The last thing I would ever want is to diminish the accomplishments of Filipinos, whether they are full Filipino, mixed Filipino, or anyone who has had the honor of carrying our flag on the international stage,” said Brando.
He emphasized that it was never his intention to belittle the accomplishments of Filipinos who have represented the country in international competitions.
Espiritu also appealed to the public not to involve businesses, partners, employees, and other groups associated with him, stressing that they had no connection to the controversy.
In the end, Brando thanked those who called him out, saying the experience would serve as a lesson that would help him better understand the impact of his words and encourage him to be more careful in the future.
