A compound sentence is a sentence that connects two independent clauses that typically uses coordinating conjunctions such as and or but to connect the independent clauses. There are actually four types of sentence structures: simple sentence, compound sentence, complex sentence, and compound-complex sentence.
But in this article, we will further understand a specific structure – the compound sentences. This type of sentence structure unites two related ideas or independent clauses. An independent clause is a clause that can stand alone even when separated as sentences. Apart from coordinating conjunctions, compound sentences may also be separated with a semicolon, a comma, a colon, or a dash.
Here are some quotes as example sentences:
- “The drought had lasted now for 10 million years, and the reign of the terrible lizards had long since ended.”
– Arthur C. Clarke, 2001: A Space Odyssey - “In this present crisis, government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem.”
– Ronald Reagan - “I used to be snow white, but I drifted.”
– Mae West - “I have opinions of my own, strong opinions, but I don’t always agree with them.”
– George H. W. Bush
Some sample sentences that are separated with a semicolon, a comma, a colon, or a dash:
- Semicolon
Example:
I like coffee; it wakes me up for my morning activities. - Comma
Example:
I like chocolate, and he likes coffee. - Colon
Example:
I know one thing: I can’t live without coffee. - Dash
Example:
He knows I’m here – he can smell my kind favorite kind of coffee.
Examples with coordinating conjunctions:
- I must go to work but I feel too dizzy to drive.
- The man ran out of money, so he stopped playing cards.
- We got here early, and we got really nice seats.
- I have a pet dog, and his name is Dos.
- I am still working, but we will eat lunch at 12 sharp.
