NBI Says Smartmatic Ex-Employee Admits Deal in Security System Breach

MANILA, Philippines – NBI said that the ex-employee of Smartmatic has admitted the deal in security system breach.

On Tuesday (April 19, 2022), the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) reported that the former Smartmatic employee identified as Ricardo Argana tagged in a supposed security breach admitted of having promised to receive P300, 000 and “training modules”.

NBI Cybercrime Division Chief Victor Lorenzo has presented several documents showing the timeline of the alleged system breach during the hearing of the Senate electoral reforms and people’s participation committee.

Smartmatic Ex-Employee

The administrative inquiry was conducted last January 12 has been presented during the hearing. The presentation shows that the third party accessed Argana’s laptop to be connected to the Smartmatic.

“In the administrative inquiry conducted by Smartmatic, he only admitted having been promised training modules in exchange for allowing them, the third party, to access his laptop in order to be connected to the Smartmatic facilities,” Lorenzo said.

Lorenzo reported that Argana appeared in their office and admitted of being promised to receive a huge amount of cash and training modules in exchange of accessing to his laptop.

“But when he appeared in our office, he admitted that he was also promised, aside from training modules, he was also promised money ranging from P50,000 to P300,000,” Lorenzo added.

Last week, the NBI-Cybercrime Division (NBI-CCD) raided the suspect’s home and recovered smartphone and some SD cards hidden in the room’s ceiling. They have also dismantled the Wi-Fi router, which is connected to the device of five other suspects.
