Transport Group Says Gov’t Fuel Subsidy for PUV Drivers Not Enough

One-Time P6, 500 Fuel Subsidy for PUV Drivers Not Enough, According to Transport Group

A transport group said that the government’s one-time PUV fuel subsidy for drivers and operators is not enough.

On Thursday (March 25, 2022), the transport group Pinag-Isang Samahan ng mga Tsuper at Operator Nationwide (Piston) claimed that the P6, 500 fuel subsidy of the government to public utility vehicle drivers and operators is not enough amid surging fuel prices.

Piston president Modesto Floranda said the one-time P6, 500 fuel subsidy will only last for more than a week. He claimed that drivers usually spend P1, 200 – P1, 300 per day on fuel.

Floranda said that the amount can really help the drivers but only for a short period of time. The group president claimed that the PUV drivers and operators will continue to suffer amid the consecutive hikes.

The transport group leader urged the government to suspend the excise tax on fuel prices, which will also cause relief to prices of basic commodities and other products. He also said that they are paying P363 in taxes per day but only receive P6, 500 for fuel subsidy.

LTFRB said that over 150,000 PUV drivers have received their fuel subsidy while the fuel voucher ride-hailing drivers is set to be released next week.
