DOH Speaks on 2 Omicron Patients in PH Who Died

DOH – The Department of Health confirmed the first two (2) deaths due to the Omicron variant of COVID-19 in the Philippines.

Countries across the globe now are on the watch for the Omicron variant of COVID-19. The said variant was first detected in South Africa and was reported to be a “heavily mutated” variant of coronavirus. Many countries closed their borders to travelers from specific nations when the variant was detected.

However, still, the Omicron spread across the globe. Several countries now have cases of the variant of concern including the Philippines which also closed its borders to those with high cases of the said variant.

PH now allows the entry of travelers from “Red List” countries provided they abide by the health and quarantine protocols set. Swab testing is also required.

The Philippines is one of the countries that recorded cases of the Omicron variant of COVID-19. The first patients were people from abroad. Recently, the Department of Health (DOH) confirmed that two (2) patients of the variant of concern died in the country.

According to the Health Department, the patients were both aged 60 years old and above and unvaccinated for COVID-19. They also have pre-existing health conditions. Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, one of the patients is from the National Capital Region (NCR) while the other is from Region 3. Currently, there is a total of 535 Omicron cases confirmed in the country.

The PH government is fighting the possible spread of the Omicron variant through the vaccination program and stricter measures. The whole Metro Manila and several cities outside the capital region with high cases of COVID-19 are under Alert Level 3 now until the end of the month. According to DOH, the Omicron variant is the predominant variant in the country now. The government encourages the people to get vaccinated.
