Climate Advocate Emphasize, Typhoons Are Not God’s WIll
TYPHOON ODETTE – According to a climate policy expert, Typhoons are not God’s will, but, a result of human action.
The Philippines is a country that’s prone to Typhoons. Each year, the country is hit by at least one typhoon. But, Filipinos always find a way to bounce back – at least this has been the narrative for many decades.
For years, the story of triumph through resiliency has echoed throughout the islands of the Philippines. Unfortunately, resiliency will never be enough to save lives.
And, although the Philippines is a highly religious country, climate policy expert Atty. Tony La Viña stressed that Typhoons are not part of God’s will.
Obviously, Typhoons are a naturally occurring thing. But, due to changes in the climate, typhoons are becoming more frequent and stronger.
Viña explained that although Typhoon Yolanda caused the most deaths, the most recent Typhoon, Odette, was worse than Yolanda. However, he said that it’s not worse in terms of death, but the “scope of destruction”.
During an interview with ABS-CBN, Viña stated:
In terms of the scope of the destruction, as we see, as we are seeing now, Bohol, Cebu, Siargao and Surigao del Norte, parts of Negros Oriental, parts of Negros Occidental, parts of Palawan have been equally damaged by this
Furthermore, Viña adds that until humans continue to ignore climate change, more Typhoons would occur and get worse. Additionally, he said that the Philippines’ response to climate change has been “dysfunctional”.
He said that all the previous presidents failed in this regard. “Nagkulang tayo”, he said as he pointed out the failures of Duterte, Aquino, and even before the time of Arroyo.
