Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, Mayor Isko Moreno’s pursuit to lessen the rice import is in line with his desire to minimize the health issues among the Filipinos and to help the agriculture industry in the country. He wants the Filipinos “to eat like Koreans or Japanese” to reduce the risks of diseases like diabetes.

Mayor Isko cited that Koreans and Japanese eat less rice and more vegetables which is the opposite of the diet of Filipinos. According to him, what Pinoys do is eat more rice since vegetables and viands in the country are expensive. However, this diet increases the risk of certain health issues and demands the government to import rice from other countries to meet the demands of the people.

The Manila Mayor wants the production of affordable vegetables for the people and to prioritize the Filipino farmers and breeders in meeting the food demands in the country. Based on the report, under his administration, he plans to only consider importing if there is a need to augment the local production in the country.

Speaking to the Agriculture stakeholders, Mayor Isko Moreno said that if he wins president next year, he would push for a five to ten-year fund for the agriculture sector in the country.

“It’s high time na yung mga ahensya ng gobyerno makapagplano ng dirediretso dahil yung funding nila garantisado,” Moreno said.
