Red Wednesday: The Significance of this Religious Event of the Catholic Church

Christians Holds Red Wednesday in Memory of the Faithfuls who died

RED WEDNESDAY – The Catholic Churches across the globe went red in commemoration of the Christians who died for their faith.

For many people, their faith in God and in their church is more than anything that this world can offer. Thus, they are willing to go through anything and everything for their faith even to the point of losing their own lives. They would rather let go of their human existence than live putting what they believe in in the backseat.

Many people died defending their faith. They are commemorated by the Catholic Churches across the globe during the “Red Wednesday”. Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, the said religious campaign commemorating the lives of the faithfuls started in 2016 in the United Kingdom. Famous buildings like the Westminster Abbey and the Westminster Cathedral were lighted with red.

In 2017, the ACN-Philippines launched the “Red Wednesday” in the country with the help of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP). It is now an annual religious event when the Catholic churches and the Christians across the globe remember those who were persecuted and who lost their lives because of their faith in Jesus Christ.

Among the big churches that joined the religious event are the Manila Cathedral in Intramuros, Maynila and the Immaculate Conception Cathedral in Pasig. Based on the report, the Immaculate Conception Cathedral is the main host of the event for this year.

This year’s religious celebration has a theme, “Red Without Fear”. ACN-Philippines executive director Monsignor Pedro Gerardo Santos said that red symbolizes the blood shed by the martyrs in standing by their faith. He clarified that the color is not in any way endorsing any political candidate stressing that it is a color of faith in God and living the Christian faith.

Pasig Bishop Mylo Hubert Vergara led the Eucharistic celebration held at the Immaculate Conception Cathedral. In his homily, he remembered Fr. Chito Suganob and many religious people who lose their lives to Marawi Seige in 2017. Along with the “Red Wednesday” celebration is the mark of the 500th year of Christianity in the Philippines.
