DENR Rescues Illegally Caught Native Birds in Bulacan Market

DENR raided a market in Bulacan for selling around 200 native birds, which were illegally caught from Candaba swamp in Pampanga.

The personnel of Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Community Environment and Natural Resources Office in Baliuag, Bulacan have raided Pagala local market for illegal selling of 129 Common moorhen or “Uwis” and 60 Buff-banded rail or “Tikling”.

The authorities seized about P18, 000 worth of illegally captured native birds from the male vendor in the local market. Unfortunately, the suspect was able to escape from the authorities during the raid.

According to the initial investigation, the vendor is selling three birds for P100. The DENR employees were able to rescue 189 native birds and set them free at the rice field between the boundary of Baliuag and Candaba.

The 32,000-hectare Candaba swamp is considered as an important wetland area in the country. The area serves as a temporary shelter for around 7,000 migratory bird from Siberia, Japan, China and New Zealand.

Those migratory birds leave their place due to extremely cold weather condition. The Candaba swamp also served as their feeding area from the month of October until March.

The authorities also warned the public that individuals who will be caught collecting, catching and selling wildlife could face corresponding sanctions and penalties. Violators would face charges for violating the Republic Act 9147 or Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection.
