PCG Personnel Seized P160-M Worth of Endangered Clam Shells in Palawan

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) personnel in Palawan have confiscated endangered clam shells which approximately worth P160 million.

On Facebook, PCG has seized a total of 324 pieces of giant clam shells that weighed 80 tons with an estimated value of P160 million at Barangay VI, Johnson Island, Roxas, Palawan on 03 March 2021.

According to the post, the operation was conducted by the PCG operatives with the support Palawan Council for Sustainable Development Staff (PCSDS), Marine Battalion Landing Team 3 (MBLT-3), and Bantay Dagat Roxas.

The government then reminded in their post the harvesting endangered giant clams locally known as “taklobo” is prohibited under the Republic Act No, 10654 or the Philippine Fisheries Code of 1998. Violators could be penalized with an administrative fine of up to P3 million and imprisonment for eight years.

Aside from the endangered clams, authorities also discovered 124 pieces of illegally-cut mangrove trees in the area. They were also confiscated in relation to Presidential Decree No. 705 or the Forestry Reform Code of the Philippines.
