Maltreated OFW in Kuwait Fainted Due to Hunger and Got Robbed by Fellow OFWs

An Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) fainted at the airport while seeking help after allegedly being maltreated by her employer in Kuwait.

According to a GMA News story, the female OFW is on her way home after fleeing her employer, who is mistreating her and not paying her properly. Maribel Cantillo, an OFW from Aurora Province, passed out due to hunger and exhaustion while interacting with fellow OFWs at a stopover in Dubai.

Cantillo’s employers did not provide her with food two days before she was escorted to the airport. Maribel claimed that in her two years as a domestic helper, she was unable to take even a single day off.

Maribel was not only subjected to mistreatment by her bosses, but she also did not get her entire salary for two months, which was allegedly 260 Kuwait Dinars (about P43,000). She was only given 50 Dinars, which is around P8,000.

However, while in quarantine, she was robbed by compatriots on her route back to the Philippines. Her fellow OFWs allegedly stole the cash aid she received from her fellow Filipinos at the airport when she landed at the quarantine hotel in Manila.

Despite that, Maribel is appreciative for the assistance she received from fellow OFWs in making it home safely. Meanwhile, Administrator Hans Cacdac of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) has stated that the agency will assist the OFW.
