Roque’s High School Objects To His Nomination In ILC

Roque’s High School Objects To Palace Spokesman’s ILC Bid

ROQUE’S HIGHSCHOOL OBJECTS – Much like the University of the Philippines, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque’s high school alma mater also spoke against him.

According to the UP Integrated School (UPIS) executive committee, it agrees with UP Diliman’s statements against Roque’s nomination to the International Law Commission (ILC).

Currently, Roque is trying to get into the ILC as one of the 34 members of the United Nations (UN) advisory body on international law. However, the former human rights lawyer has faced several bumps along the way.

Roque's High School Objects To His Nomination In ILC

On Tuesday, the UP Diliman executive committee stated:

Atty. Roque has a very poor track record of promoting, defending, and fulfilling human rights obligations especially during the administration of President Rodrigo R. Duterte which he serves as a Cabinet member

Furthermore, the Free Legal Assistance Group (FLAG) also wrote to the ILC regarding their negative assessments of the presidential spokesperson. Based on an article from Inquirer, the group’s chair, Chel Diokno said:

His public defense of extrajudicial killings, his belittling of the competence and jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court, and his cavalier disregard of the effects of domestic violations of human rights, among others make him ill-suited for the work of the Commission

However, as a response to the negative criticisms against him, Roque said UP is “conveniently” attempting to erase and ignore over 30 years of hard work and accomplishments. Furthermore, Roque believes that this was due to their politics not aligning with each other.

The election for the new ILC members is set for November 12. Members of the committee would then help formulate rules and legal norms for the UN member-states.
