Rush of People at Tondo Food Strip Amid Strict Rules Alarmed LGUs

LGUs Alarmed after People Rush at Tondo Food Strip Amid Strict Protocols

The local government of Tondo, Manila were alarmed after a crowd of people rush at a famous food strip in the area despite strict health protocols.

In the midst of the pandemic, video footage has surfaced of groups of Manileños congregating on the popular food stalls street in Tondo, ignoring social distancing rule. Because of the increased cases of COVID-19, the rapid influx of people frightened barangay officials.

Lorilario Lacson, barangay captain of Barangay 96 in Manila’s Zone 8, said he witnessed an unusual influx of individuals after 7 p.m. on Sunday, September 12. People wearing face masks but no face protection are shown in the video clip, and physical distancing is clearly not observed properly.

Lacson, on the other hand, claimed that by 8 p.m., the crowd had dispersed. No one was penalized, but the violators’ names were listed and they were informed that if it happened again, they would face complaints, according to Lacson.

Janet Dy, one of the vendors, assured officials that they had been vaccinated and were wearing face masks. However, Lacson urged people not to congregate around the food strip since it could become a super spreader hotspot, noting that there were places to buy food.

“Masarap talaga pagkain dito. Masarap, malasa. Pero baka pag-uwi ng bahay ninyo wala na kayong panlasa,” said Lacson.

Lacson also urged the public to exercise caution when visiting areas where people are congregating and to seek out other, less crowded locations wherever possible. Lacson said they deployed more force multipliers and police officers to enforce safety rules along the food strip to prevent crowds.
