Sorsogon Authorities Received Almost 4,000 911 Prank Calls in Month from Pranksters

Local authorities of Sorsogon warned pranksters who allegedly initiate prank calls on 911 after receiving almost 4,000 fake calls in a month.

The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office in Sorsogon has issued a warning to those who enjoy making prank calls to their 911 emergency hotline. According to SPDRRMO, the 911 command center received 3, 806 prank calls in the month of July alone.

They went on to say that this was more than just valid calls for assistance in an emergency. It was also discovered that 50-60% of the over 12,000 calls received by PDRRMO to the 911 hotline number were prank calls.

Bokal Krunimar Escudero is the author of the formal release of the implementing rules and regulations for Provincial Ordinance 07-2021, according to Assistant Head of Sorsogon PDRRMO Pierre Dellosa. For the first offense, an individual would be fined P1,500 and will be imprisoned for at least three months, according to the ordinance.

In addition, a P3,500 fine and at least six months in prison for the second crime, and a P5,000 fine and up to one year in prison for the third violation, depending on the court’s discretion. The Sorsogon PNP and communications providers have also been given contact numbers to block.

Dellosa again stressed the importance of the hotline number, which should not be taken lightly. Dellosa also advised members of the public to quickly report certain thoughtless acts to the authorities.
