Quiapo’s Palanca Police Community Precinct Dismisses At Least 19 Cops Over Extortion Complaints

A police community precinct in Quiapo, Manila dismissed at least 19 cops for allegedly extorting money from the jeepney drivers.

Nowadays, corruption has been one of the most common problems not only in the Philippines but also in various countries all around the world. Extortion is one form of corruption, which is very rampant among some government officials and public servants.

Extortion is a practice of obtaining something, especially money, through force or threats, which is considered as a violation of the law.

Police Community Precinct

Manila Police District director Police Brig. Gen. Leo Francisco reported that the police officers of the community precinct have been relieved from their post due to alleged extortion, which is rampant among corrupt or scalawag cops.

Francisco said that the precinct received complaints against the cops for alleged continuous extortion in the area. Most victims were jeepney drivers who were working hard jus to earn money for their families.

Palanca PCP’s commander is among the policemen dismissed from their post due to the accusations. The commander has been summoned to the headquarters to explain and give his side of the story.

Currently, Palanca PCP assigned an officer-in-charge and received two additional teams from District Mobile Force Battalion to temporarily help maintaining the peace and order in the area.

Palanca PCP covers almost half of Quiapo near the Golden Mosque.

Local Government Sec. Eduardo Año said that the extortion complaints filed by jeepney drivers already exist since 2018. The extortion cases are common along Hidalgo St. and jeepney drivers are the most victims.
