Pres. Duterte To Ask Help from U.S. in Procuring COVID-19 Vaccines for PH

DUTERTE – Philippine President Rodrigo Roa Duterte said that he will ask the help of the United States in procuring more COVID-19 vaccines.

A lot of countries across the globe are still in a tough battle against the COVID-19 pandemic most especially amid the emergence of new variants of the virus. The cases in several nations experienced a spike once again.

One of the countries that detected cases of two (2) variants of concern, the Delta and the Lambda variants, is the Philippines. Local transmissions of the former were logged in the country while it recently recorded its first case of the latter.

PH is now one with several other nations in the pursuit of herd immunity against COVID-19. It targets to vaccinate at least 70 million people for population protection.

However, truth be told that the number of the COVID-19 vaccines arriving in the Philippines is still not enough. The country needs more supplies to boost its vaccination process.

Recently, President Rodrigo Roa Duterte expressed that he will ask the help of the United States in procuring more COVID-19 vaccines. Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, the Chief Executive said that he will ask the U.S. for priority in case they have excess vaccines.

Pres. Duterte stressed that he will clarify to the U.S. that the Philippines will buy the excess vaccines from them and not ask. The country is the biggest contributor in the COVAX Facility, a vaccine-sharing venue. Earlier in August, PH received three (3) million COVID-19 doses from U.S.

We buy, we do not ask. We have saved money for this event,” the President said.

Currently, the vaccination program is ongoing amid the Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) in Metro Manila and several other provinces in the Philippines. The national government is aware of the effects of the ECQ on the economy but an action has to be taken to prevent the spread of the Delta variant.
