NCR Mayors Ban Outdoor Exercises During ECQ, MMDA Pleads for Understanding

MMDA Pleads for Understanding After NCR Mayors Prohibits Outdoor Exercises During ECQ

The National Capital Region (NCR) mayors banned outdoor exercises during ECQ pushing MMDA to plead for understanding.

On Tuesday (August 10, 2021), the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority asked the Metro Manila residents to understand the decision of NCR mayors to prohibit outdoor exercises during the lockdown period.

MMDA chairperson Benhur Abalos said that the NCR mayors agreed to temporarily prohibit outdoor exercises including biking and jogging due to the surging cases of COVID-19 Delta variant.

“Sana po maunawaan ninyo ang rason bakit itong polisiyang ito ang ginawa nila, we have to bite the bullet here. All we’re asking for is 10 days. After that the mayors will review the policy,” Abalos said.

Abalos said that the local government unit needs to make the recent “ECQ” lockdown very effective as he cited the high healthcare utilization rate in the National Capital Region.

Palace spokesperson Harry Roque also encouraged the public to obey and follow the orders of the government as President Duterte allows LGUs to defer the implementation of COVID-19 restriction.

The Metro Manila has been placed under ECQ last August 6 and would end until August 20, 2021 if the national government would not extend the lockdown. The hard lockdown has been announced due to the rising cases of COVID-19 infections.

However, the national government allowed the outdoor exercises in ECQ areas during the previous lockdown but residents would perform it within their vicinity or within the village’s premises only.

Last weekend, NCR recorded a total of 2,800 new COVID-19 cases, which is the highest figure since May 2, 2021, according to the OCTA Research group.
