Charlie Dizon Reveals the Failed K-pop Dream That Changed Her Life Forever
CHARLIE DIZON – An opportunity that once ended in heartbreak became a life-changing turning point for Charlie Dizon, who now believes her failed K-pop dream brought her exactly where she was meant to be.
Before becoming an award-winning actress in the Philippines, Charlie Dizon once pursued a very different dream. She left college and traveled to South Korea, hoping to train and eventually become a K-pop artist. Although that plan did not work out, the painful setback eventually led her toward the successful acting career she has today.
In an interview on “Oh My Gan!” posted Wednesday, Dizon shared how her journey into show business took several unexpected turns. She initially studied Nursing at the University of Santo Tomas and completed two years of the course.
“Nag-nursing muna ako sa UST. Tapos umabot akong two years,” she said.
At the time, she was considering becoming a doctor because entering show business seemed impossible without industry connections. Her interest in Korean dramas and K-pop, however, changed her direction. She later auditioned for a Korean entertainment agency and was given the chance to train in South Korea.
“So nagpaalam ako sa Nursing sa UST na mag-aartista po ako,” she said.
Dizon trained in Korea, but problems involving her contract and work documents eventually prevented her from continuing. She was initially assessed while staying in the country as a tourist.
“Tine-test ako kasi if kaya kong tumira talaga doon. Kasi ‘yung iba daw sumusuko, hindi kaya ‘yung food, ‘yung culture,” she said.
When complications later arose over the terms of her training and possible employment, the opportunity eventually ended. Dizon said there was even a suggestion to falsify the contract, which her mother firmly rejected.
“So parang umabot sa gusto nila i-fake na ‘yung contract. Siyempre ayaw ng mommy ko. So hindi na ako tumuloy,” she said.
The experience left her embarrassed and heartbroken, particularly after leaving school to chase her Korean dream. Looking back, however, she now sees the disappointment as part of a bigger plan.
“So dito pala ako,” she said.
After returning to the Philippines, Dizon joined workshops under Star Magic while continuing her education. She eventually earned a degree in Human Resource Management at De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, honoring her mother’s condition that she finish school.
“Kailangan magtapos ako mag-aaral. Hindi pwedeng nag-aartista,” Dizon recalled of her mother’s condition.
Her breakthrough eventually came through “Fan Girl,” earning her the Best Actress award at the Metro Manila Film Festival. Today, Dizon remains committed to her craft and believes her difficult journey brought her exactly where she belongs.
“I think meant to be din na nandito ako talaga,” she said.
