NGCP explained that the cable connecting Negros and Cebu contains two circuits of 138-kV submarine cable with 90MW capacity. Each circuit has a total capacity of 180MW but it was reduced down to 90MW between the two provinces due to the damage.

The corporation said that NGCP’s System Integrity Protection Scheme has been activated automatically to prevent the remaining cable from overloading. DPWH’s deviation on the work site added to the incident, according to NGCP’s initial reports.

“It is unfortunate that this happened at such a crucial time when electricity is critical to COVID-19 response efforts. NGCP assures its stakeholders that all hands are on deck to restore the affected facility and mitigate the impacts of the oil spill and scattered cable debris,” a company said.
