Malacañang Reacts to Pres. Duterte’s Arrest Warning over COVID-19 Vaccine

Malacañang spoke on the arrest warning of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte to Filipinos who reject the COVID-19 vaccine.

Nations across the globe now are in the pursuit of vaccinating its people against COVID-19. It has been a year now since the pandemic started and this coronavirus disease has taken millions of lives already.

Several brands of COVID-19 vaccines were developed. Among those brands that reached the Philippines are Sinovac, Sputnik V, Moderna, AstraZeneca, and Pfizer. Some of the vaccines were donated by other countries and the foreign groups.

Countries abide by the vaccination ladder. In the Philippines, many healthcare workers have already been vaccinated against COVID-19. The vaccination of the senior citizens and the Filipinos who have co-morbidities have also started already.

In some areas in the country, the vaccination of the economic workers have already started as well. People who have been vaccinated help encourage those who have yet to be vaccinated to get the vaccine.

However, some Filipinos are still hesitant to get vaccinated. Pres. Rodrigo Roa Duterte recently issued a warning giving Filipinos the option to be vaccinated or be arrested. The said statement did not sit well with a lot of people including some local government officials.

Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, Marikina Mayor Marcy Teodoro believes that it is not right and it is the right of the people whether they will get the vaccine or not. Malacañang spoke on the arrest warning of Pres. Rodrigo Roa Duterte to those who will reject the COVID-19 vaccine.

According to Malacañang, in the jurisprudence of the United States and the Philippines, it can be compelled or made compulsory provided that there is a legal basis. He stressed that there is a need of an ordinance or a law to make vaccination compulsory.

Currently, 2.1 million Filipinos are fully-vaccinated against COVID-19. Over 6.2 million have already received their 1st dose of the vaccine.
