A lot of people are braving the risks of COVID-19 daily and they include doctors, nurses, hospital staff, delivery personnel, airport staff, grocery store cashiers and baggers, etc. As they report to work, they do not only put food on their table but as well as serve the everyday needs of the public.

Considering the risks in going to work amid the pandemic now most especially for those whose job requires them exposure to the public, some frontliners are receiving hazard pay. It is somehow an allowance or assistance in exchange of the risks that they have to face everyday.

Among those who received hazard pay in 2020 are airport workers. More than P54 million in hazard pay were released to the people working in the airport industry amid the increasing number of COVID-19 cases in the country.

However, recently, a decision from the Commission on Audit was released and it prompted the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) to take the P54 million hazard pay granted to at least 2,000 airport workers. Based on the report, COA said that contractual workers should not have been included in the said pay.

The affected workers appealed for help from President Rodrigo Roa Duterte. One of them stressed that it was an actual duty and they reported to work amid the risks of the pandemic. Another staff lamented they have a small salary and they would have nothing left for their families in case it would be deducted from their wage.

In case the retrieval of the hazard pay released to the contractual workers would be pushed through, each of the employees will be deducted P1,500.00 monthly. More updates may be posted soon.
