Pres. Duterte Approves Splitting Maguindanao to 2 Provinces

DUTERTE – Philippine President Rodrigo Roa Duterte approved the bill proposing to divide Maguindanao into two (2) provinces.

The Philippines is composed of several provinces in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. One of these is Maguindanao which is located in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao or more commonly called now as the BARMM. Its borders are Cotabato to the east, Lanao del Sur to the north, Illana Bay to the west, and Sultan Kudarat to the south.

There are 36 municipalities in Maguindanao. Although Cotabato City can be located geographically in the province, it is administratively independent from it. In the province, there are around 508 barangays.

There was a proposal to divide Maguindanao into two (2) provinces. Recently, the said bill was approved by Pres. Rodrigo Roa Duterte.

Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, under the Republic Act 11550 signed by Pres. Duterte, the Maguindanao is divided into Maguindanao del Norte and Maguindanao del Sur. The following are the towns that compose each of these provinces:

  • Datu Hoffer Ampatuan
  • Datu Montawal
  • Datu Paglas
  • Datu Piang
  • Datu Salibo

  • Datu Unsay
  • Gen. Salipada K. Pendatun
  • Guindulungan
  • Mamasapano
  • Mangudadatu
  • Pagalungan
  • Paglat
  • Pandag
  • Rajah Buayan
  • Sharif Aguak
  • Sharif Saydona Mustafa
  • Sultan sa Barongis
  • Talayan
  • South Upi

Maguindanao del Norte

  • Barira

With regards to the seat of government and the capital of Maguindanao del Norte, it is the town of Dati Odin Sinsuat. For Maguindanao del Sur, the seat of government and the capital is Buluan.
