Philippines Becoming India “Big Possibility” Says Duque

Duque Says Philippines Becoming India A “Big Possibility” If Protocols Broken

PHILIPPINES BECOMING INDIA – Following reports of massive COVID-19 surges in India, Health Secretary Francisco Duque said the Philippines could follow.

Last week, India suffered the largest number of casualties due to COVID-19. In a day, the country recorded more than 2000 death and 300,000 new infections of the coronavirus. Because of this, health facilities were overwhelmed, forcing patients to be placed on the streets.

As a response to the tragedies in India, Duque said that if the PH doesn’t follow protocols and intensify its COVID-19 response, an India-like surge would be a “big possibility”. During an interview with ABS-CBN, he said:

Kapag hindi tayo sumunod doon sa ating minimum public health standard [and] if we do not intensify our COVID-19 pandemic response, like what has happened in India and also in some other countries where the second or third waves are being experienced, that’s a big possibility

Furthermore, Duque emphasized that the events in India should become a lesson on what’s happening in other nations. He stressed that we shouldn’t let our guard down and make it seem that we are doing fine all the time.

There’s always ways of doing things better. It’s very dynamic, every day you have to read, every day you have to watch out for what’s happening

Surprisingly, Duque’s statements have become a concrete contradiction to what Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque previously said about the governments pandemic response.

Previously, Roque lauded the government saying that it did an “excellent job” with its responses. However, the days leading to his statement, the country experienced its highest number of COVID-19 cases to date.
