“Bonilla” Kidnapping Group 4 Members Killed in an Encounter at Checkpoint

Four (4) alleged members of the “Bonilla” kidnapping group killed after a shootout occurs between them and policemen at a checkpoint.

Four men identified as members of the kidnapping group were killed when they fought with the Philippine National Police Anti Kidnapping Group (PNP-AKG) and the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) in a rescue operation conducted on two of their victims in Quezon City early this morning.

Based on the report, the group leader Wilbert Bonilla, alias Bongbong and three unidentified personnel were among the casualties. All the victims sustained bullet wounds in the encounter at Capitol Hills corner Zuzuarregui St., Brgy. Old Balara around 1:40 p.m.

The survivors were identified as Edmer Tunagan and Michael Pearsons Bongcaras, both employees of Syndtites Construction Company. According to the PNP-AKG report, the police operation was rooted in a month-long surveillance and intel monitoring of the group.

It was based on the information provided by an informant who planned to kidnap the group, a wealthy businessman in Quezon City. According to AKG director PBGen Jonnel Estomo, his team has been following Bonilla’s group until they abducted Tunagan and Bongcaras in the vehicle of their boss, a Chevrolet, with virtual plate WD9505.

The suspects were aboard a Kia besta van with license plate YKZ-682 when Bonilla’s group carried out the abduction on Commonwealth Avenue so AKG quickly contacted QCPD station 6 who quickly alerted their checkpoints while the team of the anti-kidnapping group, Estomo said.

The AKG chief added that Bonilla’s group avoided the checkpoint so they passed on the left side of the road while firing on the policemen who were guarding it, which resulted in an exchange of gunfire.

The official further stressed that the two abducted employees of the construction company were rescued and they said that it is possible that the owner of the company was the target of the kidnapping group.

He added that two vehicles were at the scene of the crime where the bodies of the suspects were also present along with an M-16 rifle with a magazine and ammunition, three. 45 caliber pistol with magazine and ammunition is a. 38 caliber revolver.
