Phivolcs Records Over 2, 000 Volcanic Tremors in Taal Volcano in Past Month

Phivolcs Releases Latest Update in Taal Volcano

VOLCANO ALERT – The seismology agency Phivolcs has recorded over 2, 000 volcanic tremors in Taal Volcano in the past month.

On Wednesday (March 24, 2021), the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded a total of 2,015 volcanic tremors, 734 low-frequency volcanic earthquakes, and 18 hybrid earthquake events since February 13.

Taal Volcano remains under Alert Level 2 amid the increase volcanic activities, which triggers irregularities and earthquakes. Harmonic tremor with magma migration have been the dominant type of quakes recorded since March 19.

The volcanology agency also reported that the most quakes detected in Taal were at shallow depths of less than two kilometers while large tremors came from two to six kilometer region beneath Taal’s edifice.

The volcano reportedly emits a total of 1,184 tonnes of sulfur dioxide per day last March 21, 2021.

“Overall seismic energy release has markedly increased since yesterday afternoon compared to previous seismic swarms,” Phivolcs said.
