164 Volcanic Quakes Recorded Around Taal Volcano, Phivolcs Says

The state volcanology agency Phivolcs recorded a total of 164 volcanic earthquakes and 67 tremors around Taal Volcano in the past 24 hours.

On Thursday (March 18, 2021), the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology released the latest updates about Taal Volcano. The agency recorded 164 volcanic earthquakes and 67 tremors in Taal Volcano, which is under Alert Level 2.

Phivolcs reported that the volcanic tremors last for around one to two minutes. The number of volcanic activities on Wednesday nearly tripled on Thursday. The volcano reportedly emitted around 605 tons of sulfur dioxide.

The seismology agency advised the residents around the volcano to take precautionary measures for possible sudden steam-driven or phreatic explosions is possible, as well as volcanic earthquakes and minor ash fall as it remains under Alert Level 2.

The bureau also prohibits the entry to Taal Volcano Island, which is considered as a permanent danger zone (PDZ). Local government units have been also advised to prepare for possible evacuation in case Taal shows more signs of unrest.

Aircrafts are also advised to fly near the crater of Taal Volcano for possible sudden explosions.
