55 Earthquakes Recorded in Taal Volcano in the Last 24 Hours, Phivolcs Says

The state volcanology agency Phivolcs recorded at total of 55 earthquakes at Taal Volcano in Batangas in the past 24 hours.

On Wednesday (March 17, 2021), the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) released the latest updates regarding Taal Volcano. The agency recorded a total of 55 tremors.

Phivolcs said that out of 55 earthquakes, 44 tremors lasted from two to five minutes as it remains under Alert Level 2, which indicates a sign of increased unrest.

The seismology agency said that Taal Volcano reportedly emits an averaged 689 tons/day last Tuesday (March 16). Its highest temperature was recorded at 71.8 degrees Celsius on March 4.

Taal also generates weak emission of steam-laden plumes that reached over 50 meters high. The volcano’s landscape continue to change since the January 2020 eruption, which indicates an increase of magmatic activity.

“These parameters may indicate increased magmatic activity at shallow depths beneath the edifice,” Phivolcs said.

The volcanology bureau prohibits public to enter the Taal Volcano Island for possible sudden steam-driven or phreatic explosions, volcanic earthquakes and minor ash fall. The agency also warned the residents near Taal Lake to prepare for evacuation in case of renewed unrest.
