51 Earthquakes Recorded at Taal Volcano in 24 Hours, Phivolcs Says

The state volcanology agency Phivolcs recorded at least 51 earthquakes at Taal Volcano within the 24-hour monitoring period.

On Wednesday (March 10, 2021), the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) released the latest updates about Taal Volcano. The active volcano remains under alert level 2.

Phivolcs reported that 41 out of 51 recorded tremors are episodes of volcanic tremor having durations of one to four minutes. The main crater continue to emit steam-laden plumes that reaches 5 meters high.

On March 4, 2021, the agency recorded a temperature of 71.8 degree Celsius at the main crater of Taal. The seismology bureau also recorded a very slow inflation of Taal since after the eruption last January 2020.

The volcanology bureau also prohibited the residents to enter the Permanent Danger Zone as Taal remains under alert level 2 indicating an increase unrest. Sudden steam-driven or phreatic explosions, volcanic earthquakes, minor ashfall and expulsions of volcanic gas are expected.

“DOST-PHIVOLCS strongly recommends that entry into TVI, Taal’s Permanent Danger Zone or PDZ, especially the vicinities of the Main Crater and the Daang Kastila fissure, must remain strictly prohibited,” Phivolcs said.
