Pampanga Residents Use Rabbit Meat Used as Alternative to Pork Products in Pampanga

Pampanga residents are now using rabbit meat as an alternative due to the soaring prices of pork products amid the African swine fever.

Over the past few months, the prices of pork products continue to increase due to the shortage of supply caused by the African swine fever. Meat vendors and consumers are already struggling with the current crisis.

Guagua, Pampanga resident Anne Mendoza is doing her best to spend her budget wisely amid the rising cost of basic commodities. She is struggling with the soaring prices of pork products in the market reaching P400 per kilograms.

“Unstable sobrang mahal po, doble lalo na nung nagholiday po, sobra talagang mahal… no choice po, kasi kung everyday manok, baka lumipad na kami,” Mendoza reiterated.

The Department of Agriculture said that other meat traders are taking advantage of the situation to manipulate the prices of pork meat.

Many Filipino consumers are already looking for an alternative due to the rising prices of pork products. Some of our countrymen tried rabbit meat, which cost almost close to pork meat’s price.

According to the website “livestrong.com”, rabbit meat has no fat, more flavorful, and contains more protein and other health benefits. DA has already proposed rabbit meat as alternative to pork meat.

Kevin Dizon Tuazon and his family in Brgy. Sta. Lucia, San Fernando, Pampanga converted their piggery into a rabbit hub.

“Madami nang pumupunta dito. May pumupunta na from Ilocos, from the northern area, Tarlac, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Bataan, Metro Manila, Paranaque. ‘Yan pumupunta na rin dito nagtatanong kung meron kasi dun sa area nila wala na din, wala na silang maproduce,” Tuazon said.
