Department of Agriculture Says Pork Products Supply Sufficient Amid ASF

Pork Products Supply Sufficient Amid ASF, According to Department of Agriculture

The Department of Agriculture said that the supply of pork products are still sufficient amid African swine fever.

On Friday (October 30, 2020), Agriculture Assistant Secretary Kristine Evangelista said  that the Philippines has enough supply of pork meat despite thousands of pigs have been killed due to ASF.

Evangelista also said that shipping of live hogs and pork products from Visayas and Mindanao would increase to resolve the dropping supply of meat in Luzon. The drop in supply of pork in Luzon was due to the depopulation of hogs infected by the disease.

However, the DA secretary said that the price of pork products in Metro Manila and other parts of Luzon may increase due to the cost of transportation and production.

“We understand that our meat dealers will be incurring additional expense kaya tayo nagkaroon ng bagong suggested retail price, making sure of course na equitable pa rin po,” Evangelista said.

The agriculture secretary said that the department is planning to expand livestock and poultry production. The government allocated P337 million for the project.
