Here’s what Johnny Manahan said about the effect of SNL on ABS-CBN
Sunday Noontime Live director Johnny Manahan said that their show on TV5 made ABS-CBN scared but this thing happened.
Mr. M has spent decades of his career in showbiz in the Kapamilya network. For several years, he has also handled its talent management firm Star Cinema. However, he had his network transfer to TV5. In his show in the Kapatid network, known Kapamilya stars Piolo Pascual and Maja Salvador also joined him.
Following the discontinuation of SNL, Johnny Manahan did some revelations that shocked the online community. He said in a previous article that his network transfer was due to the “shadow talent center”, aside from the existing Star Magic which he was handling.
Mr. M also revealed that Brightlight Productions owner Albee Benitez promised them that their show was being given 2 seasons to air. That is why, Manahan said that it surprised them when they were told that the show was ended.
In an article in The Philippine Star, Johnny Manahan said that ABS-CBN was challenged when SNL started. However, the weakness of TV5 started to manifest, according to the veteran director.
“You know what, for a while, I think they were scared — scared of little me, little us… For the first show, pinaghandaan talaga kami. They put up this huge show with all the talents, including, I don’t know, Charo Santos, Lea Salonga… the whole shebang,” he said.
Mr. M also said that all they had were “little Piolo, little Maja” and their show rated higher than its rival. “Then the weaknesses of Channel 5 began to show — their signal, some people didn’t even know Channel 5 was on the air… They don’t have everything, all the elements, in place, not like ABS,” Johnny Manahan added.
