Samsung Chief Lee Jae-yong Faces Corruption Verdict

SAMSUNG – South Korea’s Samsung chief Lee Jae-yong is now facing verdict over a sprawling corruption scandal.

ON Monday (January 18, 2021), Samsung Electronics vice-chairman Lee Jae-yong is facing a corruption verdict that might put him inside the jail. The verdict has been announced after the retrial.

Jae-Yong becomes the head of the massive Samsung group over the past few years after his dad suffered from a heart attack and left bedridden. His dad is reportedly dying in October due to its condition.

In 2017, Lee has been imprisoned for five year due to bribery, embezzlement and other charges. Eventually, most of his bribery cases has been dismissed and the appeals court suspends his sentence the following year. However, the Supreme Court ordered Jae-Yong to face a retrial.

The Samsung de facto chief also issued a public apology last May 2020 for company misconduct including the company’s controversial plan for him to get the leadership.

Jae-Yong’s father Lee Kun-hee and grandfather — Samsung founder Lee Byung-chull have faced lawsuits but never served time in jail. Experts said that the firm’s plan to invest billions in strategic bets if Lee will be jailed.
