Avoid Alcoholic Drinks To Maintain COVID-19 Vaccines Efficacy, DOH Undersecretary Warns Public

The Department of Health warned the public to avoid alcoholic drinks to maintain the efficacy of COVID-19 vaccine.

On Friday (December 11, 2020), Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire advised the public to avoid alcoholic drinks as preparation for the upcoming vaccine against the coronavirus disease.

Vergeire made the statement after a Russian health official advised the public to stop alcohol intake about two weeks before receiving the Sputnik V vaccine. The vaccine recipients should also avoid any alcoholic beverages 42 days after the vaccination.

The DOH executive said that the alcohol could affect the efficacy of the vaccine. Drinking would cause a drop in the body’s immune system, which could weaken the body’s resistance.

“These are just precautionary measures. We all know that when you drink alcohol, especially when you drink it too much, bumababa po ang immunity natin, and when you receive a vaccine, para mag-work maigi sa inyo ang bakuna, kailangan robust ang system mo,” Vergeire said.

The health personnel made the announcement to keep the public’s optimum health amid the coronavirus pandemic. She also advised to avoid the intake of anything that could cause harm to the body.
