40 Nigerian Farmers Killed By Suspected Extremists
NIGERIAN FARMERS – Alleged members of Boko Haram, an Islamic militant group, has slain 40 Nigerian farmaers and fishermen in Borno.
This came from a statement from one of the officials, adding that the death toll could rise to about 60 people, according to SunStar.
The attack occurred in a Garin Kwashebe came on the same day that residents were casting votes to elect local councils. This was the first time it occurred in 13 years, although many did not go to vote.
The farmers were said to have been rounded up and summarily killed by armed insurgents in retaliation for refusing to pay extortion to one of its militants.
The massacre was confirmed by Malam Zabarmari, a leader of a rice farmers association in Borno state, who said that about 40 to 60 people could have been killed.
Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari showed grief over the killings, condemning the said act.
“I condemn the killing of our hardworking farmers by terrorists in Borno State. The entire country is hurt by these senseless killings. My thoughts are with their families in this time of grief,”
Buhari added that the government had given the armed forces everything needed to take all necessary steps to protect the country’s population and its territory.
Based on the report, Ahmed Satomi, who represents the Jere Federal constituency of Borno, said that about 44 burials were taking place on Sunday.
“Farmers and fishermen were killed in cold blood. Over 60 farmers were affected, but we only have so far received 44 corpses from the farms,”
Boko Haram, as well as the Islamic State West Africa Province, are both active in the region. The decade-long insurgency of the former has left thousands dead and displaced tens of thousands.
The faction usually force villagers to pay illegal taxes by taking their livestock.
