DOLE Worries Rate of Unemployment in Philippines May Increase Due to Latest Typhoons

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) is fearing that unemployment in the country might increase due to the recent calamities.

Labor Assistant Secretary Dominique Tutay expressed its concern and fear regarding the possible increase in numbers of unemployed workers in the Philippines. “Definitely it will affect the employment situation in the country,” Tutay said.

The agency would determine the total numbers of employees affected by the series of typhoons. The Philippine Statistics Authority could determine the impact of calamities after undertaking the next Labor Force Survey.

Tutay said DOLE’s data shows that the powerful typhoon displaced about 300,000 to 400,000 families in Bicol region, Calabarzon, and Mimaropa. The Philippines is still recuperating from the impact of the coronavirus pandemic when the powerful typhoons struck Luzon.

The COVID-19 pandemic alone has already displaced millions of employees not only in the Philippines but also in different countries all around the world.
