According to Panay News, troops from the 61st Infantry Battalion (61IB) had a five-minute firefight against 15 armed men, suspected to be New People’s Army (NPA) yesterday early morning.

61IB commander Lieutenant Colonel Joel Benedict Batara said that his men were having a community security patrol in the area when the incident happened. The troops were unharmed in the firefight while there were casualties on the rebels side.

The armed men were said to be members of the Suyak Platoon, Southern Front Committee of NPA Panay.

Batara vowed that his unit will continue its peace advocacy and counter-insurgency campaign in the communities.

“These communist insurgents are going out of their foxholes after they were denounced by the local populace during the indignation rally at Barangay San Jose, Miag-ao, Iloilo. We will not allow these terrorist groups harm our people and destroy their families,”

The same rebels also harassed the Citizen Armed Force Geographical Unit (CAFGU) detachment in the aforementioned barangay by firing their guns several times then left.

3rd Infantry Division spokesperson Major Cenon Pancito III said that this is an act of cowardice, based on the report.

Gusto lang nila mang-harass to make their presence felt but the populace in the area was affected,”
