Leni Robredo Says Cops’ Treatment of Detained Activist Nasino ‘Overkill’

LENI ROBREDO – Vice President Leni Robredo slammed the government’s handing of the funeral of jailed activist Reina Mae Nasino’s 3-month-old baby.

Kadamay Manila coordinator Reina Mae Nasino was among the 3 activists arrested during a police raid in November last year. They were charged with illegal possession of firearms and explosives.

On Friday afternoon, the jailed activist’s 3-month-old baby River was buried at the Manila North Cemetery. The baby died die to gastroenteritis complications.

Reina Mae Nasino was prohibited to join the funeral procession and was only given three hours to bury baby River. Lots of people raised their concern on how the burial of the baby was conducted.

There was a strong presence of cops and BJMP who were deployed to escort the Nasino at the Manila North Cemetery. BJMP spokesman Chief Insp. Xavier Solda said they imposed strict security measures because she is a “high-risk” detainee.

On Sunday, October 18, Vice President Leni Robredo slammed the cops handling of baby River’s burial. Based on a report from Philstar, she described the incident as an “overkill.”

“For me it’s an overkill,” she said in her weekly radio program.

According to the report, Leni Robredo described the scenes at the baby’s funeral as “heartbreaking.” She said, “We saw pictures, we saw footage. We don’t know why the response (of the authorities) was that much. Where is our compassion, humanity?”

Leni Robredo also condemned the unfair treatment of the jailed activist by a Manila court, which turn down her petition to take care of her sick child.

“She was not given the chance to take care of her child while several personalities were granted privileges, even those convicted remain free,” she said.

In a previous article, netizens slammed the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) spokesperson Celine Pialago’s Facebook post. She said Nasino’s supporters turn her plight into ‘drama serye.’
