What did Leni Robredo say about the pardon granted to Pemberton?
Vice President Leni Robredo gave her reaction to the decision of President Rodrigo Duterte to grant absolute pardon to US Marine Lance Cpl. Joseph Scott Pemberton.
Pemberton was imprisoned after he killed transwoman Jennifer Laude in 2014. However, the Chief Executive expressed in his televised speech that it is his own discretion to grant pardon to the American soldier. Duterte cited that the officials miscalculated the years of imprisonment of Pemberton in relation with the pardon given due to good behavior.
Atty. Rowena Flores, the soldier’s lawyer, stated that their camp had no idea why the President had this decision in favor of her client. However, Flores stresses that Pemberton is happy to hear this good news for him.
Several celebrities reacted against the pardon decision for the American soldier. One of them was Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach who is now advocating the “Trans Lives Matter”.
In line with this issue, VP Leni Robredo also released a statement. Based on the report from Inquirer, she is questioning if the decision is fair and just.

“Pemberton had lawyers, special detention facilities, a quick public trial, and an appeal. Now it appears more clear that he also had resources to ensure that he could draw attention to his case from the President himself,” the Vice President said.
Robredo added that the decision of the President just showed that the government favors the powerful. She also stressed that there are many Filipinos with lighter offense but haven’t received any attention.
For the Vice President, the poor are getting punished while the rich and powerful are being freed. “We continue to hope that the President exercises his vast powers in a manner that is fair and that benefits the common Filipino,” VP Leni Robredo said.
