BuCor Retrieves Over 400 Bladed, Blunt Weapons In New Bilibid Prison
BUCOR – The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) recently seized more than 400 hidden bladed and blunt weapons in the New Bilibid Prison.
The search was followed after a deadly violence erupted between two gangs there, according to a report from GMA News.
The bureau’s officers led by Director General Gerald Bantag, as well as policemen searched Buildings 5 and 8 Monday after they received “persistent intelligence reports” saying that bladed items were being stored there to be used as weapons by the members of Sputnik and Commando gangs.
An FFA (free-for-all) scuffle between the two factions in October 9 resulted in the death of nine inmates, and seven more injured.
Photos from the bureau showed authorities confiscating the said weapons, among them include saws, hammers, crowbars, and wooden rods, which were hidden in inmates’ cells, temporary shelters, and under ground.
“This search operation is a strong message delivered to these two groups creating violations and distraction inside the prison camp that such criminal behaviors and activities need to be stopped at all cost,”
Based on the report, BuCor added that Bantag talked to the gang leaders again, with the latter assuring the chief that the brawl will never be repeated.
Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra ordered both the BuCor and the National Bureau of Investigation to look into the riot.
The bureau gave Guevarra a partial report Monday but that he told them to “investigate more thoroughly.”
