Former cop Derek Chauvin, suspect of George Floyd case, released after posting a million dollar bail.

GEORGE FLOYD – The former US police officer, suspect of George Floyd’s death, has been released from prison after posting $1m (£774,000) bond.

The terrifying and horrifying death of unarmed black man named George Floyd underneath the knees of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was recorded and spread like wildfire online. The video showed the duration of how firmly the officer pinned down the black man by the neck, twisted, on the cemented pavement and turned deaf to his cries of help.

It ignited protests from various parts of United States which also led to global protests and calls for police reform with most people crying for justice for Floyd. The autopsy report from Hennepin County Medical Examiner showed that he died due to “cardiopulmonary arrest complicating law enforcement subdual, restraint and neck compression”.

The charges he faced included third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. The other three officers who were with him also faced charges such as two counts aiding and abetting second-degree murder and two counts of aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter. These officers are Thomas Lane, J. Alexander Kueng, and Tou Thao.

And now, people expressed intense outrage online as Chauvin posted $1m (£774,000) bail for his freedom from the criminal acts he has done. Last June, a judge set a bail of $1.25m with no preconditions or $1m with conditions such as the suspect not contacting Floyd’s family, surrendering his firearms and not to work in law enforcement or security as he waits for his trial.

And he was released through a conditional bail. Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office reported that he got released on Wednesday (17:30 GMT). The civil rights lawyer of the victim’s family, Ben Crump, expressed devastation as to how this would embody as a reminder that they are still far from achieving the justice they deserve.

The four officers are to face their trial in March next year.
