Surigao del Sur Hit by Earthquake with 3.9 Magnitude

EARTHQUAKE – The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded a 3.9 magnitude quake in Surigao del Sur, September 23, 2020.

Most of the time, quakes hit with no prior signs. Recently, several places in and out of the Philippines were shaken by quakes of different magnitudes.

One of the strong quakes recorded by Phivolcs is the 7.1 magnitude quake in Davao Oriental. There were expected aftershocks due to the said quake and a tsunami advisory was released.

Previously, in April 22, Phivolcs recorded a quake in a part of Zambales. It had a magnitude of 6.1. Strong shaking were felt leaving people fearing about the so-called “Big One“. But the agency advises the people to wait for factual information and not to panic.

Recently, a quake has hit a part of Surigao del Sur. At 06:52 am, September 21, 2020, Bayabas was hit by an earthquake with a magnitude of 3.9.

According to Phivolcs, the quake that hit a part of Surigao del Sur was located at 09.16°North, 127.33°East – 117 km North 80° East of Bayabas. The quake was tectonic in origin and had a depth of 001 kilometers.

Phivolcs stated in its bulletin that no damage is expected of the said quake. No aftershock is expected of the said quake as well. According to the agency, the quake is an aftershock of the 5.7 magnitude quake in Bayabas last September 21.
