Senator Says 8 Hours Online Classes Can be Another Stress to Students and Parents
The Department of Education (DepEd) plan to make online classes last until 7 to 8 hours can cause another stress to a family amid the pandemic.
The DepEd has earlier announced that online classes will last seven to eight hours. Adjustments need to be made because the opening of the class on August 24 was scheduled to begin on October 5.
“We need to abide by the law that it has to be about 200 to 220 calendar days and therefore there have to be some adjustments,” said the DepEd Undersecretary Jesus Mateo.
“There are several things. It can be done through extensions of all the classes. That means from 6 hours, it can be extended to about 7 to 8 hours in a day just so we can extend the number of hours for the delivery of the minimum essential learning competencies,” he added.

Senator Sherwin Gatchalian, on the other hand, said that what is planned should be carefully considered. He said that up to eight hours of online classes in the middle of the pandemic will cause additional stress to students and their families.
According to the report of Inquirer, the senator stressed that it is important to have a proper balance in the quality of education and the mental well-being of children and their families.
“This is an option that we can do, we can also do remedial classes during the weekend. But we need to balance very carefully because the pandemic created a lot of mental stress to our parents and to our students and another stress from school will not help the well-being of our families,” Sen. Gatchalian explained.
Eight hours focusing on the screen of smartphones and computers is not a good idea, the senator added. He said it must ensure that the health of the students will not be affected by the changes that DepEd wants to implement.
