Appreciation and gratitude poured in for the Filipino frontliners who are fighting the 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Doctors, nurses, health workers, utility workers, security guards, and supermarket personnel are now our ‘modern heroes.’

A young man from Cebu named Charles Hendricks Dela Peña composed a poem for the frontliners. His spoken poetry talks about the sacrifice of the healthcare workers who continue to fight the virus.

Dela Peña uploaded his video titled “A Spoken Word Poetry Tribute to Frontliners -SIGWA” on his Youtube Channel on May 17, 2020. Based on a report from Cebu Daily News, he said he started drafting the poem last March.

“This is to make people appreciate and recognize the painstaking service of our frontliners who fought against COVID-19…”

“It urged me to write these lines, ‘Kung papaano natin labis na inaasam ang makalabas ng bahay ay siya rin’ pagnanais nila na makauwi at makapiling muli ang mahal nila sa buhay’ because people started to complain about being bored in the house and really want to see the outside world, without realizing that there are those people who sacrifice the bond with their family to serve and fight for our safety,” he added.
