TUBA TOWN – A local piggery in Tuba town, Benguet, which was owned by a barangay chairman, was recently closed by local authorities.

This was because the piggery committed a series of violations of environmental laws, according to a report from ABS-CBN News.

Residents of Twin Peaks in Tuba said that the piggery emits stench that is deemed harmful to the environment.

“Ito po ay napakabaho po. Hindi ko matanto kung ano. Dyan kasi yang mga babuyan na yan, yan yung nagbibigay ng sakit sa kalikasan dito. Sana hindi naman ganito ang paglapastangan sa ating kalikasan,”

The local municipal government, with their Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO), made an action regarding this concern.

The piggery was owned by a barangay chairman named Allan Bayninan.

With the recommendation from MENRO, the piggery was closed.

MENRO said that the establishment was near Bued River where it dumped pig stool and dirt there. Furthermore, the establishment had no permit to operate there.

As per the report, Bayninan promised to relocate its piggery elsewhere and apply for a permit.

“Temporary lang yun kaya walang tangke… Ililipat ko sila,”

The Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) in Cordillera said that the establishment was not supposed to be allowed to built, especially near rivers.

“Pinagmumulan ng fecal coliform… Fecal coliform kasi is the bacteria that came from human and animal waste so yun pagtayo ay nakaligo sa isang river na masyadong mataas ang fecal coliform eh ano yan, hindi natin alam mga virus, bacteria yan eh di ba. E-coli, mga ganyan. So prone tayo sa waterborne diseases so napakaimportante na ang fecal coliform ay within the standard,”
