The arrest of the suspect, identified as Shinji Aoba, aged 42 years, was after he recovered enough from his own burns so that he can respond to the police investigation, according to Time.

Aoba was arrested on murder and arson allegations, which was 10 months after the police obtained the warrant. This was because they had to wait for him to recover. They also had to wait to nab him until the coronavirus emergency in the nation was fully lifted this week

The suspect was accused of heading to Kyoto Animation’s No. 1 studio and setting it on fire in July 18, 2019. The incident has left with 36 fatalities. This put Japan in shock. and resulted in anime fans worldwide grieving over the incident.

Police reports show that Aoba carried two containers of flammable liquid, stormed the studio’s front door. dumped the liquid and set it ablaze via a lighter.

Ther were about 70 people who were working inside the studio during the time of the incident.

Among them were one survivor, who said that he had to jump from a window of a three-story building gasping for air during the heat after seeing a “black mushroom cloud”rising from downstairs.

Many others attempted to escape but failed. Among the fatalities were most of them who died of carbon monoxide poisoning.

As per the report, Aoba also sustained burns on his face, torso and limbs, and was unconscious for weeks. He was said to have been unable to walk or feed himself without aid.

Aoba claimed that he set the studio on fire because it “stole” novels. The prosecutors are expected to seek charges against him within a few weeks.
