Mother Infected With COVID-19 Shows Breast Milk Contains Coronavirus

BREAST MILK – Traces of the new coronavirus were found in the breast milk of mothers who tested positive for COVID-19.

This would be the first-ever case of its kind to date. Previously, the coronavirus was confirmed to be present in different parts of the body, not only the lungs and the throat.

Research showed that the virus could potentially be found in the semen and now breast milk. According to an article from News Week, two women positive for COVID-19 participated in the study.

The women’s nipples were disinfected before collecting samples to prevent accidental contamination. Afterward, the milk was collected using a pump.

As per the article, the researchers analyzed the milk with a “highly sensitive technique” which could detect and quantify the levels of the virus’ genetic material.

One of the women in the study had mild COVID-19 symptoms. However, when her milk was taken, she displayed no symptoms of the virus. –

But, the milk from the second mother tested positive for COVID-19 for four consecutive days when she had mild symptoms of the virus. Although, when her symptoms started to fade, the breast milk collected tested negative as well.

Sadly, her baby also tested positive for coronavirus. However, researchers are still unsure whether or not the baby caught the infection from the breast milk or another way.

According to the researchers, the mother wore a face mask every since she started showing symptoms. Moreover, she took precautions as she handled and fed her baby such as cleaning her breasts and sterilizing pumps.
