COVID-19 Up To 100x More Infectious Through Eyes Than Airways

COVID-19 INFECTIONS – Research revealed that the coronavirus is 80 to 100x more infectious through the eyes.

As the viral outbreak spread through to the world, medical experts advised people to protect the eyes mouth and nose. Even with face masks, people are still vulnerable to the virus through the eyes.

As such, the University of Hong Kong research found that the spread of COVID-19 is far greater in the upper respiratory airways and conjunctiva. These are also known as the cell linings of the eyes.

According to Dr. Michael Chan Chi-wai of HKU, they conducted their research by culturing tissue from the human respiratory tract and eyes. Next, they applied traces of the new coronavirus.

Based on an article from SCMP, Dr. Chan suggested this could explain the higher transmission rate of COVID-19 when compared to SARS. In lieu of this, medical experts now further emphasized the importance of washing hands regularly.

Moreover, the study urged the public not to touch their eyes especially when outside of their homes. This was due to the virus being able to survive on the surface of certain objects for a long period of time.

Meanwhile, researchers from China have also found evidence that COVID-19 was present in semen. Following this, researchers now theorize that COVID-19 may possible be spread through intercourse.

However, further studies still need to be conducted to arrive at a certain conclusion. Currently, the virus is now known to be present in a human’s urine, blood, saliva, stool and semen.
